Two very well known names in global shipping were elected yesterday to run the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA).

Angad Banga, chief operating officer at The Caravel Group, has become chairman of the association with Richard Hext, chairman of Vanmar Shipping, becoming his deputy. 

Speaking with Splash for our brand new Hong Kong magazine, Banga argued Hong Kong’s strengths as a maritime hub are multifaceted and comprehensive. 

“It has a strong maritime industry ecosystem, a great geographical position within Asia and is a key gateway to mainland China.,”Banga said, adding: “Our Hong Kong industry ecosystem is supported by the city’s sound legal frameworks and arbitration systems, strengths in innovation and an extensive talent pool.”

The HKSOA is one of the world’s largest shipowning associations, its membership controlling a combined fleet in excess of 223m dwt. Chairmanship normally lasts for two years at which point Hext, whose career includes long shifts with John Swire & Sons, Pacific Basin and founding Level Seas, is expected to take over from Banga.
